Although Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot often: the construction of the first self-propelled mechanical vehicle or car in about 1769, by adapting an existing horse-drawn vehicle, this claim is disputed by some of the required [citation], doubts that three Cugnot Wheeler's always running or remained stable.

What is not in doubt is that Richard Trevithick built and demonstrated his Puffing Devil road locomotive in 1801, which many believe to be the first demonstration of a steam engine-powered vehicle, although there have not been able to obtain adequate vapor pressure for long periods and maintain, would have of little practical use.
