Clapton left the Bluesbreakers in July 1966

Clapton left the Bluesbreakers in July 1966 (being replaced by Peter Green) and formed Cream, one of the first supergroups. Cream was also one of the oldest trio of "power," with Jack Bruce on bass (also of Manfred Mann, the Bluesbreakers and the Graham Bond Organization) and Ginger Baker on drums (another member of the PMDB). Before the creation of Cream, Clapton was already known, but in America, left the Yardbirds before "For Your Love" reached the top U.S. to ten, and still had to do.

During his time with Cream, Clapton began to develop as a singer, songwriter and guitarist Bruce although most of the voices and wrote the bulk of the material with lyricist Pete Brown. Cream's first concert was an official act in the Twisted Wheel in Manchester July 29, 1966 before their full debut two nights later, the Jazz and Blues Festival in Windsor. Cream legend continued with the established high-volume and interference blues extended solos of their live shows.
